IRVINE, Calif., June 9, 2021 — AcuFocus, Inc., a privately held ophthalmic medical device company, announced today that it has appointed Jason H. Safabash as its Vice President of Research & Development (R&D), citing his more than two decades of experience as a leader in bringing eye-care devices to market.
Mr. Safabash is an experienced technical leader who has a proven track record in successfully developing and delivering innovative presbyopia-correcting IOLs and injector systems to the ophthalmic market. Certified in areas including risk management and human-factors analysis, he is an energetic motivator and inspirational coach who has led teams in overcoming complex technical challenges.
“We are extremely pleased to welcome Jason to the team. As the developer of a wide range of patented technologies, we know that Jason will make transformative contributions to AcuFocus as our company prepares to launch its small aperture intraocular lens (IOL) in the U.S. and work to identify—and address—additional unmet patient needs,” said Alan Waterhouse, President and Chief Executive Officer, AcuFocus.
The IC-8 small aperture intraocular lens is currently being evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after AcuFocus submitted a premarket approval application earlier this year. This first-of-its-kind small aperture lens, designed to provide continuous extended depth of focus and enhanced adaptability, is already approved for use in select markets.
“I am thrilled to join AcuFocus’ growing team as it prepares for launch of the IC-8 IOL in the U.S.,” Mr. Safabash said. “I am excited to lead the R&D team as it seeks to leverage small aperture technology and further cement the company’s position as an innovator in providing vision-enhancing solutions for cataract patients across the globe.”
